The sticky white (sometimes yellow) sap of wild lettuce contains the pain-relieving compound called "Lactucarium". While the sap can be gathered for use from small cuts in the stem of living wild lettuce, it is easier to harvest the fresh plant, chop all prts of it up into small pieces, add alcohol to extract the Lactucarium, then carefully evaporate off the alcohol to leave tar-like substance load with the pain-soothing molecule.
