While I guess you could argue that the purpose of freeze dryers is to avoid ice crystals as-well. I wish I had more of the same material to run a comparison.

The best way is the machine which is just the right amount of mixing. Then hand mixing, then a cake mixer and the last is a drill with a mixer bit. I think a blender would be really mixing it to hard.
