Jul 7, 2011 · We are planning on doing a tile backsplash, and I've been reading that tiling with thinset mortar over drywall joint compound is bad. So now my plan is to again rip down the drywall that I hung, hang new drywall, and use fibatape, then thinset for the joints. Then once the cabinets come in and are intalled, do a tile backsplash.

Nov 6, 2009 · Sounds like Formica. I'd try to remove it first if possible. If it does have some lose spots that could be a problem later if you tile over that. I put ceramic tiles over a laminate backsplash in my old home once I was certain the laminate was not coming off without taking the drywall behind it with it.

Dec 4, 2012 · I'm no expert, but I had this exact problem. Tore off an old backsplash and some of the drywall paper with it and left the brown paper showing. Rolled it over with Gardz which dries really hard and kind of soaks into that paper so it won't bubble up when it gets wet, then tiled with Adesilex thinset (It was glass tile), and it stuck very nicely.
