The floors are oak and maple, and are due for a professional grade sanding. Sep 19, 2005 · If so, I would stain/poly the pieces separatly prior to attching them together. If it is unassembled pieces for the buffet and hutch that need complete assembly - that require glue joints and/or twist lock joinery (or other joinery methods), then assemble first before stain/poly.

I noticed the stain come sout differnt. Using the pad the satin is a little darker than using the brush, but the brush seemed to pull out the wood grain more.

Feb 9, 2007 · It is correct that the stain will thin the poly, but the poly also thins the stain. My experience is that a max ratio of 50/50 works, but that 25/75 seems to be better and does not affect the drying time. When doing this I always need to build the color. Each additional coat of stain & poly deepens the color.

Aug 1, 2005 · no. stain is meant to soak into the wood grains. Since polyurethane seals the wood grains and is a clear coating over the wood, stain would simply sit on the surface and wipe right off. Even if you left it to dry, when you brush on the polyurethane, the solvent in the finish would dissolve the stain making a big smeary mess.
