Peter Duryea, prefect at a private school here, got his "six of the best" by slipping out after lights for a dance in town. Four other boys involved also got lashed.

In England “public” schools are expensive private schools, often where pupils boarded. What they all had in common was the thwack of the cane across the seat of the trousers that rewarded boys who misbehaved. At home I used to pretend I was one of the boys sent for “six on the bags” as the school stories had it.

Looking back, it was strange that that was the end of the punishment. Why? Because the housemaster usually had an ample selection of canes, and generally allowed the victim to choose which one would be used.

The rattan stick, which I assume is a cane, was propped on the wall behind the headmaster’s desk on my last visit, but whatever goes on in his room is the stuff of legend.
