Poetry is dumb in the same way any art form is dumb. Ultimately they're all pointless except for them moments when you truly connect with it. Also studying any art form is a good way to get a gauge of the emotional/social climate at the time. However I don't think you should have to write an essay about it or be graded on it.

Taught poetry for 30 yrs. Start with some simple poems like Emily Dickenson. Easy to see what she is doing and she's a wonderful poet who wrote mostly for herself. Don't stop with one or 2 poems, read a lot. E D is a controlled writer, she uses rhyme and rhythm. If you want to write try copying her style. Good luck, poetry is a wonderful world/
