I sprayed an etch primer directly onto the cast iron and alloy parts and then top coat directly onto that but with the tinware I have applied a primer filler and will have to wet rub them ...

I would recommend using epoxy instead of the old green self etching primer. 1) Epoxy Primer is a two part primer consisting of the primer and an activator. 2) Epoxy primer is used as a direct to metal primer (DTM) because it has excellent corrosion resistant properties.

Dec 14, 2014 · I'm not a metallurgist, but I think cast iron is stable, long wearing, easy machining, and one of the best materials they had at the time. Modern valves have alloys that are better. It wasn't long ago that you had to do valve jobs on many engines before 100,000 miles, early engines 10-20,000 was expected life. Now we hardly ever see a burnt valve.

May 17, 2005 · I am having some trouble with Rust-Oleum industial enamel. I am painting cast iron that has been sand blasted and cleaned with lacquer thinner. I followed the directions and painted in low humidity and about 60 degrees. I primed several coats of primer and about 2-3 coats of green within an hour.

Can bent cast iron be straightened? - Antique Engines
Nov 15, 2013 · Iron workers - I have ordered new grates for my Buffalo Pitts. The brackets that hold them up in the firebox are slightly warped due to time & heat. They are useable, but the question is; Can cast iron that is slightly warped be heated and carefully bent back? Have never tried that and wondered if I should try that, or just leave well enough alone.

I'm using a side grinder some places and a sanding disc others while trying to retain the best cast appearance. This experience tells me that maybe the engine builders did use filler to cover rough castings. -- Ralph. I agree with both, Most engines are best restored back to original condition.
