Only after a commercial treaty between Captain Welsh and Gaurinath Singha, the then Ahom King of Assam on 28th February, 1793, salt from Bengal entered Assam. Slowly the demand for hill salt declined and now it exists as ritual practice only. The chemical composition of these brines resembles with rock salt.
