2013年4月9日 · As far as the Aerovee is concerned, it is an 80 hp engine, but that power is delivered at a high rpm, which means you'll need a short prop. All of that translates to limited thrust at low speeds (and the long takeoff rolls and slow climb mentioned by others). We had a local gentleman who purchased an Aerovee powered Sonex that was already flying.

Spark plugs are $5 each at th local auto store, a set of 4 brand new pistons, cylinders, and rings can be had for under $200, etc. You can do a full overhaul on the aerovee motor for less than just the inspection cost on a certified engine.

2018年6月12日 · The aerovee engine has a horrible safety record. There have been way too many engine failures on takeoff with many of those resulting in fatalities or severe injuries. It isn't just a problem of people not building or maintaining the aerovee correctly.

2018年6月12日 · The Aerovee folks claim 80 hp at 3400 rpm Great Plains claims 80 at 3600 rpm. Both builders have increased the displacement of their engines to over two liters, but IMO haven't dealt with the limited amount of cooling that can be done with the stock heads.

2007年1月5日 · One interesting alternative is AeroVee with turbo. Unfortunately, the death of Jeremy Monnett is going to be a major setback for that program. There are a few crazy Euro engines in this class, such as the D-moto and ICP. But one has to be even crazier than Viking customers to install one of those. BTW, I'm not sure the 701 really needs a 914.

2008年10月13日 · That is why the Aerovee is 80hp; it's kind of the limit of a VW engine without a gearbox, and a gearbox would go against the Sonex factory "keep it simple" philosophy. Sonex has been working up a turbo unit for the Aerovee for a few years now, and it's in flight testing. It's allegedly 100-ish horsepower, but it adds weight and heat.

It weighs just a few pounds and would have very very little to no effect on CG and the ability to control the airplane.
