Jun 13, 2009 · So a wall 24' long x 8' tall and 6" thick is; 240" X 96" X 6"= 960 bf... or roughly $450 of wood at our local mill. I can also purchase milled 6x8 D logs with tongue and grooves top and bottom for about $4.50 per lineal foot at a local log home plant, it takes 13 rows of them to get up to 8'. They stack much tighter and look good.

Feb 12, 2007 · I used 4 x 12 hemlock beams on mine. I spaced them at 48" and used 2 x 8 T & G flooring. One thing I did was use true 4 x 12 beams. The mill rough cut them at 4 1/2 x 12 1/2 and then planed them down. I felt this would give them a bit more beef. The span was just over 17'. (My original plans called for 4 x 10 but I went bigger).

Dec 5, 2013 · Note that I want to build a continuous beam and not multiple simply supported beams, due to the numerous structural advantages. I have come across some conflicting information in the various sources I have reviewed. Some say that the splice must be located over a support. For the floor beams, supported at four locations, this will not be a problem.

Nov 25, 2011 · Most site built beams I see on this site are both glued and nailed. Pegg are you referring to a specific nail pattern or edge nailed like every foot or six inches? Thanks Rick A good standard nail pattern, on 2x6 I do two one two one two , spaced about 4 to 6 inches apart. 2x8 / 2x10 step up to three two three two again spaced 4 to 6 inches apart.

Aug 10, 2007 · Get some balsa wood from a hobby store. Model aircraft builders use it. A 1/8" X 1/2" would be scale to a 2x8 (close enough for this purpose) A 1/4" X 1/4" balsa stick would be approx scale to a 4x4. For illustration purposes place two supports 10 - 12 inches apart. Place one 1/4 x 1/4 stick on top of another and press down with a finger.

Apr 17, 2013 · Use nicer, denser stock and the Fb and E numbers will go up a bit. However, the way deflection calcs are really done by engineers is to check deflection on the live load only not on the live + dead load. Use the dimensions 3.5 x 5.5 and enter 1120 for the load, click "show result" and deflection will pass.

Jul 12, 2010 · I'd go for a 4"x8"x 8- or 10- or 12-feet long, bolted to the twisted beam, probably on the upper back of the upper side so that the twisting/straightening force would push the twisted beam clockwise/down.

Don't rely only on the bolts to hold the beams. Set the beams on top of the wood posts and connect them with appropriate metal brackets or wood plates as shown. There are many different types of metal brackets and strap anchors. Ask locally at the lumber yard as these will vary by brand and the size of beam and post.

Nov 19, 2015 · The trib width on the beam is 8' wide. 8' x 50psf=400 lbs per lineal foot of beam (no panels). So take a stab at 12' Multiply 12' of beam length X 400 pounds per foot load on the beam, enter 4800 lbs in the load tab and 144 in the span and try it, an iterative process, make another more educated guess and try again. Holler if you get stuck.

The beams were 40 feet long, 28 feet for the cabin, and 12 feet for a deck. We had to rent an engine hoist to lift the beams up to level, and place the 6x6 posts underneath. Check out the installed beams in the picture below. At this point, we began constructing the 'A' frames on the beams using 2x8 rough-cut material.
