This is what makes NMR so useful for structure determination in organic chemistry. There are three main features that will affect the shielding of the nucleus, electronegativity, magnetic anisotropy of π systems and hydrogen bonding.
5.3: Factors That Influence NMR Chemical Shift
Any nucleus in the shielding zone will be shifted upfield. The same thing occurs for alkynes, and it is the reason why the methyl groups in this alkyne are shifted so far upfield. Another example is the ketone, whose carbon atoms lie in the deshielding zone, and are thus shifted more downfield.

In nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, the chemical shift is the resonant frequency of an atomic nucleus relative to a standard in a magnetic field. Often the position and number of chemical shifts are diagnostic of the structure of a molecule.
The Upfields and Downfields of the NMR Spectrum
In NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), downfield and upfield refer to the position of signals on the spectrum. Downfield signals are located on the left side of the spectrum and have higher energy, while upfield signals are located on the right side of the spectrum and have lower energy.
Since benzene has an 1H-NMR chemical shift of about 7.3 ppm for its H-atoms, substituted benzenes will have chemical shifts slightly upfield or downfield of 7.3 ppm.
Protons in a given environment absorb in a predictable region in an NMR spectrum. Most protons absorb between 0-10 ppm. The terms “upfield” and “downfield” describe the relative location of peaks. Upfield means to the right. Downfield means to the left.
