R-19 and R-21 Insulation? - Homesteading Forum
Jan 2, 2008 · The price difference for doing this house in R21 instead of 19 is about $286. One other thing I found was that fiberglass insulation loses some R value when it is compressed. R19 will have to be compressed to fit into a 2x6 wall but R21 will not so the difference may be slightly better than I thought.

Dec 4, 2024 · Oh, I meant to mention that dead trunk freezers with drain plugs in the bottom can serve similar purposes when put up on wooden platforms. When the temperatures outside are freezing the insulation in the freezer walls and in the lid helps to prevent the liquid inside from freezing solid as long as the lid is kept closed.

If you have old asbestos floor tile or insulation, the worst thing you can do is to try to remove it. It does no harm where it is....Asbestos exposure is not associated with increased lung cancer. Measles-thee-lioma is, but only in smokers.

Dec 1, 2004 · Our cement block well house has a jet pump, water storage tank, and the pipes coming up out of the ground and back down into the ground. It has just a single layer wooden door, and this is at the back of our pasture, about 150 yards from the house. We put insulation around the inside of the building, and we've still had it freeze once.

Jan 24, 2008 · Also pipes in exterior walls create cavities that insulation cannot exist. While the insulation may be 3.5" thick every where else. Where that pipe runs could easily be only 1" thick creating a easy place for heat to escape. This would be best to add insulation to the outside to keep the pipe within the heated area to keep it from freezing.

Jan 13, 2018 · I bought a frost king 18 ft heat tape and per the manufacturers instructions ran two strips of aluminum tape along the bottom of the PVC lines, then taped the heat tape to the bottom of the line slight coils around pressure regulator and two vertical runs. Covered it with insulation and it still works every winter!
SIP vs 2x6 with spray foam (energy efficient home building)
Feb 15, 2010 · It comes out R16 if you use the closed cell (expensive) spray in foam insulation. The SIP wall would be more like R25, or more if you use the polyiso insulation in the SIPS. A lot of people improve the perfromance of the 2X6 wall by adding an inch or 2 of rigid foam board on the outside -- this keeps the thermal bridigng on the studs down.

Jul 13, 2007 · Regular insulation batting, with plastic sheeting tacked inside of that for vapor barrier. Please do not put flammable material under the house! Especially if you have hot water pipes, a furnace or hot water heater, or even forced air ducting under there. Big fire hazard!
