Jaintias are a matrilineal Mon-Khmer speaking group of people inhabiting the eastern part of Meghalaya, a hilly state of north-east India. They speak Mon-Khmer of the Austro-Asiatic language family (Rao 1991). They are traditionally megalithic users and are well known for erecting megaliths, and for their matrilineal descent.
