To do this, I need to see what iteration the loop is on so that they can be spaced out accordingly. Just using the "item" key doesn't work, because it's not a simple integer. I would make a variable and every process I would at there delta time. If the variable is less than 5, execute the line.

A while loop shouldn't perform any worse than a for loop for the same number of iterations. If your game is crashing it's either because you're doing something very expensive each iteration or your loop is never terminating. To help debug this, instead of using a while loop you could put the same code inside your _process() function.
