As an artist-created and artist-centered foundation, Chinati’s mission is to care for its collection and present it to a broad public; to build community and support artists through public programs, artist residencies, educational activities, and exhibitions; and to steward the architecture and the land that Judd conceived as integral to Chinati.

Chinati is located in the high desert, and visitors will spend a significant amount of time outdoors. The sun is intense throughout the year. Hats are recommended.
The Chinati Foundation
The Chinati Foundation is located on 340 acres of land on the site of former Fort D.A. Russell in Marfa, Texas. In 1978, with financial support from the Dia Art Foundation, Judd began repairs and renovations to the fort’s historic buildings, followed by the fabrication and installation of artwork.

The Chinati Foundation. 1 Cavalry Row, Marfa, TX 79843. Wednesday – Sunday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Final entry for all visitors is 4 p.m. Guided tours are the best way to see Chinati’s collection. Advance reservations are strongly encouraged. Chinati’s main grounds occupy the 340-acre site of a former military base, Fort D.A. Russell.
