Is the US the modern indian tribes or something? Mexico is a spanish ex-colony just as the other ones. When one says "modern Aztec Empire", one definitely doesn't mean Mexico.

Anyway, I'd argue that people's origins aren't important for a national flag as much as the current identity it represents (hence why people are often reluctant to change their current flag even when it's quite bad).
