Seeding Rates. Grain sorghum seed varies greatly in size (11,000 to 27,000 seeds per pound); however, forage sorghums can have as many as 55,000 to 68,000 seeds per pound. This variability with respect to seed size can have a substantial effect on plant population if planting rates are determined on a seed weight per unit area basis.

4 天之前 · For silage production, the usual procedure is to plant forage sorghum in rows at a seeding rate of 5 to 10 lb/acre. Plants grown in 30 to 40 in. rows usually yield as much as those grown in solid stands, and the lower leaves are retained on the plant longer.
Sorghum can be established in conventional, reduced tillage, or no till cropping systems with drill seeding or broadcasting. Soil temperatures should be between 60– 70°F before planting sorghum. The recommended seeding depth for all sorghums is ¾–1 ¼ inches in heavy soils and up to 2 inches in sandy soils (Undersander, 2003).
Sorghums, Sudangrass, and Sorghum-Sudan Hybrids - Team Forage
Recommended seeding depth for all sorghums is 3 ⁄ 4 to 11 ⁄ 4 inches in heavy soils and up to 2 inches in sands. Seed at the rate of 12-15 lbs/A. Sorghums are normally seeded with a corn planter using 20 to 30-inch row spacing. Sudangrass is usually seeded with a grain drill at 20 to 30 lbs/A using 6 to 7-inch row spacing.
