Due to the fact they were black men working in the 1940s-60s, their names didn't appear on scientific publications and their accomplishments were not recognised until the twilights of their careers.

But it was also a place where, at the end of the American Revolution, one in three black inhabitants were enslaved, a statistic that, inevitably, drove a wave of activism in the years to come.
