Two human cases of H5N1 avian flu have been confirmed in San Joaquin County, health officials reported Friday. The cases occurred in farmworkers with known exposure to infected animals, and both people have had mild symptoms and are recovering, according to a news release from San Joaquin County Public Health Services.

Both state and federal health officials stressed that the risk of the general public contracting bird flu is low.

A southwest Louisiana resident has been hospitalized with the state’s first recorded case of bird flu, or H5N1, a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza the patient contracted after exposure to sick and dead birds, the Louisiana Department of Health announced Friday.

The Louisiana Department of Health said on Friday it has detected the first presumptive positive human case of H5N1 bird flu infection in the U.S. state.

Bird flu is affecting more and more dairy cattle. There’s no sign yet of human-to-human spread, but new dimensions of the outbreak continue to emerge.

LDH said 60 human cases have been reported nationwide as of Dec. 13, all linked to contact with infected animals. No human-to-human transmission has occurred in the U.S.
