I realize use fluctuations occur based on weather, etc but how difficult is it to secure one of the non-reservable shelter areas on a weekend in June? Is it advised to show up very very early to claim?

Yes, shelters can be reserved ahead of time. This is done frequently for parties or school groups. However, not all people appreciate having the shelter reserved, so you will need to get there early and "protect your ground", so to speak. I advise putting up several large signs around the shelter. Highbanks will send someone to help if you need assistance.
