May 20, 2017 · Bressay’s fortunes are very much on the up with the transformation of the former primary school into a community hub and the Speldiburn Cafe, officially opened yesterday by MSP Tavish Scott. The spacious school building, which once had 55 pupils, closed in 2014.

Researched and designed by Bressay Primary School pupils with help from Bressay History Group, the 6 panels installed in 2014 form a trail which tell the stories of 9 shipwrecks which occurred on Bressay's coastline. Leaflets which accompany the trail are available from the Bressay Heritage Centre.
Bressay with the tale of Jimmy Lamb leaping over the banks to escape at the Veng and also the school pupils, Andrew Leask and James Spence, taken from the Swarthoull schoolhouse in 1808. The tunnel could equally have been a place to stow contraband such as alcohol and tobacco and avoid paying excise duty.
